When I first read the back cover of this second autobiography by Charlie McCarty, I felt trepidation about opening it and reading it. "This one describes squabbles with churches, a neighbor, a grocer and customers." It sounded like the book was a volume of gossip. I needn't have worried. The author has too much integrity to do that. As he explains in the first chapter, "As much as possible I've left out or disguised the names of the people involved. I'd like to leave a record of our struggles without making it an attack on those good people. . . It would cheapen this work and make it unacceptable if I used fictitious names."
In fact, in the chapter titled "The Honor Roll," and other parts of the book, McCarty describes some of the good and honorable people he has encountered, and here he does name names.
Fightin' 'em to Help 'em follows McCarty's course as a lumber and hardware store owner and operator, from the initial plan, through implementation and improvements, and finally his slow exit from the business. Any person who has never owned a business will find insight into all the difficulties of running a business: unreasonable expectations, bad debts, theft, and unreliable employees.
Throughout the book is the theme "I had a good store. I offered a good service, saving people hours of time and gas driving to the city. But it was not recognized, appreciated, or well-utilized."
Gone with the Wind, by Margaret Mitchner, tell the tragic tale of misunderstood intentions and a woman who didn't know what she wanted until it was too late. Fightin' 'em, while less eloquent, has the same message, but in the context of true anecdotes.
Living in Catron County is a unique situation. Because of our low population, we know our neighbors who live 20 miles away better than most city folks know their next-door neighbors. It's a lot like a family. And, like a family, our relationships with each other can be sweet and rich, or they can deteriorate into ugly gossip and resentment.
The book begins and ends with stories of the author's experiences in helping to build churches: the first one physically, by constructing the building, and the second one by bringing in a new pastor. In spite of the mundane subject matter, this book essentially raises spiritual and social issues and offers an opportunity for the reader to self-evaluate: Do I judge my neighbor? Do I envy someone I perceive to be wealthier than I? Do I hold a grudge? Do I try to help others, or just take what I can get? And, very specifically to this book, Do I appreciate and patronize the local businesses in my community? The warning is, If we don't use them, we'll lose them.
